พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงเริ่มพระราชนิพนธ์เพลงเมื่อมีพระชนมพรรษาได้ ๑๘ พรรษา ในปีพุทธศักราช ๒๔๘๙ ทรงพระราชนิพนธ์ทำนองเพลง “แสงเทียน” เป็นเพลงพระราชนิพนธ์เพลงแรก และจนถึงปัจจุบันมีเพลงพระราชนิพนธ์ ทั้งสิ้น ๔๘ เพลง ทุกเพลงล้วนมีทำนองไพเราะประทับใจผู้ฟัง สอดคล้องกับเนื้อร้องซึ่งมีคตินานัปการ และเป็นส่วนสำคัญส่วนหนึ่งของชีวิตคนไทย ในยามที่บ้านเมืองไม่สงบสุข ก็พระราชทานเพลงปลุกใจ เพื่อเป็นขวัญกำลังใจ แก่ ข้าราชการ ทหาร พลเรือน และประชาชน ผู้ปฏิบัติหน้าที่เพื่อประเทศชาติ มิให้เกิดความย่อท้อในการทำความดี ต่อชาติ ศาสน์ กษัตริย์ ต่อตนเองและสังคม

พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงใช้ดนตรีให้เป็นประโยชน์ทางอ้อมในหลายด้าน อาทิ ทรงใช้เครื่องดนตรี
เป็นสื่อผูกพันสถาบันพระมหากษัตริย์กับนิสิตนักศึกษา โดยเสด็จ ฯ ไปทรงดนตรีร่วมกับนิสิตนักศึกษามหาวิทยาลัยต่างๆ อยู่นาน กว่า ๑๐ ปี

ในคราวเสด็จเยือนต่างประเทศ ก็ทรงใช้ดนตรีเป็นสื่อ กระชับสัมพันธไมตรี ระหว่างประเทศกับนานาประเทศ
ได้อย่างแน่นแฟ้นยิ่งขึ้น พระปรีชาสามารถด้านดนตรี ในพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว เป็นที่ชื่นชมของชาวต่างประเทศ

In year 1946, at the age of 18 years old, His Majesty the King started to compose the melody of “Sang Tien” (candle light) which was his first song. Up to the present, there are altogether 48 songs composed by His Majesty the King. All songs have impressive melody , harmonized lyrics , good meaning and are always considered as important factors of every Thai people. Especially during the unpeaceful period in Thailand, His Majesty the King composed some patriotic music as moral support to government officials, militaries, and citizens. Through those songs, the King tried to provide encouragements for people to perform the right things for the nation, religion, king, one self and the society.

His Majesty the King used music as the indirect tool in many ways such as he used music as the connecting bond between the royal monarchy and university students by playing music with university students for more than 10 years.

During his state visits, he was able to use music as a tool for profound and well-established relationship between Thailand and other countries. Moreover, His Majesty the King’s musical talent was widely impressed by foreigners.
